Keep Rolling

A new piece just for fun, because I’ve been on a roll creating new images. This illustration pretty much describes how I feel right now.

Ch-Ch-Changes

I’ve been itching for a change over the past few weeks. After a few months of one routine I tend to get a little antsy. I’ve been working at the gallery for 3 months now and getting used to the Monday-Friday thing, the commutes to work on the ttc and packing my lunch every morning. But everyday that I’m at the gallery I’m searching for opportunities, doing new artwork and thinking of ways to get my work out there.

Last week I answered a post on craigslist and ended up meeting with James Robertson, the creative director at Watersource Creative, a boutique agency in Toronto that does work for everything from Nike and Kia to Cannibas Culture Magazine and Toronto’s Beer Festival. James and I hit it off immediately and he gave me a piece to work on for a blog /newsletter promoting the Toronto Freedom Festival. After handing in the completed project James decided that my style would set the tone for the entire series of interviews on the blog and is taking me on as part of the collective that is Watersource. Since then I’ve finished two portraits of different people involved in putting on the TFF. Here is a look at the new pieces:

I’m super stoked at the opportunity to work with these talented people and to take on new projects and challenges. It’s just one of the advancements or evolutions taking place in my life right now. Stay tuned for an updated portfolio, updated site and a whole new look to Alyssa Andres Illustration. Because sometimes we all need a little change.

Rihanna’s Film Debut

Getting back to some illustration after finishing work on the gallery’s website and email newsletter campaign. Thought I’d focus on some portraiture for the next little while  and I started with a piece of Rihanna for her first movie role in the upcoming “Battleship” movie. Her transformation from Hollywood bombshell to kick ass action hero for the movie puts her in a new light but I thought I’d still maintain her signature sex appeal in this piece, strategically placing my battleships to protect her assets ;)

Falling in Love with Design

The more I look at and study design the more I’ve been falling in love with it. It’s absolutely everywhere. As I take the time to stop and consider it I see the thought behind it and the power that it is on the observer. Choosing between one font or another or the placement of a word on a page is the difference between someone stopping and looking or walking right by. Sometimes a good design is what makes the information relevant or not. It’s what makes people care. There are so many aspects to consider and the main goal is communication.

I’ve been working away on my design. I’m starting to see myself more as a designer and less as simply an illustrator. I see now that I have to be both, and more. I’ve always felt the need to communicate; for my work to portray a message. Often times it’s not just about an image for me. It’s about words that go along with it and make you look even further into it, on another level.

In terms of careers I would love to work for a magazine and be the one designing the beautiful spreads. As I look through pages of magazines like Food & Drink and Vogue I see the art behind each page and what a feast for the eyes they are, as well as the mind.

Check out the Design section of the website to see my most recent design projects that have been updated over the past couple of days. They’re projects I have taken on for my portfolio to expand my portfolio and experiment with design.

Reunited with InDesign

So I have been pretty much MIA over the past couple of weeks and that was due to a huge project I took on at The Christin Gallery. As most of you know, I started a new job about a month ago looking after the art gallery in the King Edward Hotel which is an offspring of the main gallery at King and Yonge.

The gallery is small and intimate and has been somewhat neglected as things at the main gallery are busy and there are only a total of 3 full time employees there including the owner. So I decided to take it upon myself to photograph and inventory all the paintings in the gallery and put together a nice catalogue that clients can look through and see all of our work. Little did I know what I was getting myself into when I discovered that this little gallery had over 140 original paintings in it, not including the sculptures and statues it houses!

So needless to say I have been busy compiling and designing this catalogue and am just putting the finishing touches on it before it’s going to be sent to the printers for mass production! The catalogue is over 60 pages long but here is a preview of just a few layouts  for you to get an idea.

To receive the full catalogue with all the paintings from the King Edward Gallery email me at info@galeriechristin.com and I will get one out to you. It’s worth having a look. We represent some very prestigious Canadian artists and have quite a wide range of styles and subject matter.

Next up on the To Do List is update the gallery website and start sending email updates. The fun never stops!

You’ve Got To Have Friends

Over the past week I have been busy at the new job, learning the ropes and getting familiar with my environment. I have also been doing a little freelance work courtesy of my old friend, Dani Gagnon. She has her own company called The Like Button that handles social networking for businesses and promotes them on the web. She came to me recently to help her out with some custom Twitter backgrounds for a couple of companies that had just signed up with The Like Button; St.Louis Wings Beach Location and TIPS Travel Insurance.

This was a really great experience for me and another thing to add to my resume and in my portfolio. It’s so important to have friends who will trust you to do good work for them without question. Check out Dani’s site at thelikebutton.ca and see her hilarious promotional video “Shit Dani Says…”  If you know of any companies who are looking for a hand with social networking and online promotion contact dani at dani@thelikebutton.ca or by telephone at 416-540-1288

Surface Stories

Over the summer I had some spare time (which was a foreign idea to me, having just finished my degree in Illustration where every waking minute was spent producing artwork) and wanted to meet new people, get involved with new things and challenge myself.

This goal compelled me to respond to a post on craigslist that was looking for people with visible scars. I was in a pretty bad bicycle accident a couple years back and I thought, why not? When else was I going to actually get something out of having these scars?

So I met with 2 girls who were producing a book called Surface Stories; a collection of stories and images about people and their scars. Often we see people with scars and we wonder “what happened?” I know, myself having scars, I often get asked about them. At first I was self conscious but after a while I decided that I shouldn’t let them bother me because it’s not worth it and my scars are unique to me. Now I’m kind of proud of them. It reminds me of what I’ve been through and to be more careful!!!!!!

I just got the photos from the shoot that took place last month and thought I’d post them for you to see! If anyone else would like to take part in the Surface Stories project, feel free to message me and I will put you in contact with the creators.

3 Days, 3 interviews

It’s been a whole week and not one post from me. For this I apologize. All the time I spent in front of my computer over the past couple of weeks paid off finally and I actually started getting some calls back! So I’ve spent all week traveling all over the GTA (one day I went all the way from Islington to Coxwell to Roncesvalle and then back up to Bloor/Bathurst on the TTC) going to interviews and meeting with people.

The first interview was at an art gallery and that is where I went on Monday. The interview with the gallery director went well and the position would be just Mon-Wed 10am-3pm, keeping the gallery open and interacting with customers. The salary was low but I knew it would be a low key job, and the hours would allow me time to work on my illustration.

The second was at a graphic design/printing/shipping store in the west end of Mississauga. I knew the commute would be annoying but I figured if I could get some good design experience out of it then it would be worth it. Once I got to the location I realized that I wouldn’t be doing much design work at all, but mostly running a store front similar to Staples. And the pay was not much more than the gallery! When I added in the cost of the commute it simply wasn’t worth it.

My last interview was on Wednesday and it was all the way up at Keele and Finch. I had no idea what I was getting myself into with this one. I had applied to a lot of jobs and all I knew was that it was an administrative assistant position that would involve some graphic design. When I got there I discovered it was for an online deals website and the hours were 9am-6:30pm Mon-Friday. I would be doing everything from designing graphics, to writing summaries, answering emails, inputting data etc. Long story short this job would have been my life. I would have to leave my house at 7:30am and wouldn’t be home until 8pm. I was not willing to do this for a)the amount of money they were offering (again very low!!) and b) the direction it would take my career in.

So as of now I am starting work at the art gallery on Monday! I’m really looking forward to being in a relaxed setting surrounded by artwork. It’s a far cry from my days as a bartender in some of the busiest restaurants in the city! This leaves me time to do freelance work as well as other artistic pursuits I’m interested in.

Things are just starting to come together.
